Del Piero puts Juve through
Thursday, November 06, 2008

Juventus secured their passage to the knockout stage of the Champions League after seeing off Group H rivals Real Madrid 2-0 at the Bernabeu on Wednesday.

After setting Juve on their way with the opening goal in their 2-1 win over Madrid last time out in the competition, Alessandro Del Piero was again the hero with goals after 17 and 67 minutes to seal the win.

The hosts had chances to get back into the game, but were left to rue a number of mistakes as they fell four points adrift of their Italian rivals.

Zenit St Petersburg have second-placed Real in their sights after claiming their first win in the group, a 2-0 success at BATE Borisov.

Goals in each half from Pavel Pogrebniak and Miguel Danny were enough to lift Zenit off the foot of the table, even though they played the last 17 minutes with 10 men following the dismissal of Sebastien Puygrenier.

Lyon moved to within touching distance of the last 16 thanks to goals by Juninho and Anthony Reveillere in their 2-0 victory against Steaua Bucharest.

The win lifts the French champions up to eight points and they are now neck and neck with Bayern Munich, who earned a late 1-1 draw at Fiorentina.

In Group E, winger Ryan Giggs bundled home six minutes from time to rescue a 1-1 draw for Manchester United at Celtic, while Villarreal were frustrated in their attempts to claim a place in the last 16 as they were held 2-2 by a battling AaB side.

Arsenal remain at the top of Group G despite despite being held to a frustrating goalless draw by Fenerbahce.

Porto closed the gap on the leaders to two points though with a 2-1 win at Dynamo Kiev. Lucho Gonzalez scored a stoppage-time winner before being sent off as the Portuguese champions came from behind.
